As such, determining which dog clippers to purchase can be a bit of a challenge.

A Guide to Dog Blankets: Keep Your Furry Friend Warm and Comfortable

September 6, 2022 — by Valeriya Vimon

pet-blankets.jpg

Have you ever noticed how much your dog enjoys curling up next to your pillow or jumping on a floor-mounted pile of laundry? Dogs, just like humans, are creatures of comfort. So why not use a blanket to help your dog create their own space, a safe and cosy spot it can enjoy both the day and the night?

Do Dogs Need Blankets over Them?

If you’ve ever seen your dog shivering, there’s a likelihood your dog has been cold, needing some support to get warm. That can happen both indoors and outdoors, especially in colder months. Since there’s a chance for dogs to be chilly, regardless of their thick fur, the answer to the question if they need blankets is yes, and a pet blanket can do the trick with keeping them warm. Here are other reasons your dog may benefit from having a cover year-round.

It Helps Create a Sense of Security

Since they’re pack animals, dogs enjoy the security they get when they burrow into a cosy place. Giving your pup a calming dog blanket can help them create a den on the floor, in your bed at the feet, or inside a crate. If you’ve recently welcomed a new puppy or adopted a dog from a shelter, adding a soft blanket to their sleep space can help them adjust to their new home.

It Helps Them Regulate Body Temperature

Some dog owners who worry about their dogs being cold dress them in sweaters or jackets. But as dogs can’t remove clothes, they can get too warm. That makes a blanket a better choice. When they’re cold, dogs will burrow themselves under their blankets. If they get hot, they can push the blanket away. With such pet supplies, you don’t need to be concerned that your dog will become overheated.

Even though dogs have fur coats on all the time, some still get cold. Small dogs, puppies, and older animals frequently require extra warmth. Dogs with short or thin coats and skinny dogs enjoy cuddling up on blankets. Beagles, Boxers, Chihuahuas, French Bulldogs, Great Danes, Greyhounds, Poodles, Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Yorkshire Terriers are ten breeds thought to be a little bit more cold-blooded.

It Supports Their Nesting Instincts

Your dog wants a place to call its own. Once your dog starts using the blanket, it will continue to smell like them, which will help them feel more at home. They quickly become aware that that’s their spot – the place where the blanket is.

It Becomes a Shelter from the Storm

Dogs typically fear loud noises, such as thunder and fireworks. Your dog may stay calmer if it can curl up in a favourite blanket.

It’s Comfort On-The-Go

When travelling, a blanket packs lighter than a dog bed. Additionally, it will keep your dog calm in unfamiliar settings like a hotel room or a friend’s home.

It Protects Your Furniture

Unlike most furniture, a blanket is simple to throw in the washing machine. Throw blankets over your sofa or couch to protect it from pet hair and muddy paw prints. It’s also an easy way to keep the playpen clean so it’s win-win for both of you!

How to Choose the Right Dog Blanket?

Finding the best pet blanket is not an easy task, but with some guidance you can find the model that best suits your dog’s needs as well as your own. The purchasing experience will be smoother if you consider what you need. While some blankets combine several features for a dog’s comfort, others only highlight a few.

Consider your pup blanket’s primary use. You probably want an option that covers your furniture while giving your dog a cosy place to sleep if your couch or bed is a magnet for dog hair. Or, if you’re worried about keeping spills and muddy paws off your furniture, you might want to think about getting a stylish blanket that’s waterproof and designed for dog hair loss.

For example, you might want a blanket to withstand moisture for a senior dog with incontinence issues. Or perhaps you want a blanket with self-warming capabilities to keep Fido warm on chilly winter nights. Another strategy for choosing the best dog blanket is to think about where you want to use it. For instance, a blanket intended for a couch, easy chair, or bed will be larger than one meant for a crate.

Maybe you want to focus on finding a blanket that will fit inside a crate. Fortunately, some extremely plush pet blankets for dogs are available in crate-appropriate sizes. Perhaps you want something particularly unique, like a custom pet dog blanket. If so, it’s best to find a sturdy design for comfort that you can also customise. A personalised blanket serves as both a memento and a handy item.

To Sum Up

Blankets are beneficial for all dogs. Dogs who are young, old, or ill require extra comfort. Small dogs, dogs with short hair, and dogs with a tendency to have colder blood need the added warmth. Dogs enjoy the comfort of their blanket, and blankets are excellent alternatives to dog beds. Considering your dog’s needs, the blanket’s main purpose and where you want to put it can help you find the ideal supply for your furry pal.

Steps to Choosing the Right Bed for Your Large Dog

March 25, 2021 — by Richard Dawson

large-dog-bed-with-memory-foam.jpg

Pampering your dog with its own bed is as important as teaching your dog good behavior with the help of the right tool. Although dogs won’t mind laying their heads down literally anywhere around the house, it’s fundamental that your dog has its own space for napping and sleeping at night. The choices for dog beds are huge, and although smaller dogs can fit almost in any type of bed, large dogs, unfortunately, can not. Usually, they are twice as big or maybe more than small dogs, (depending on the breed), which also explains why you can’t just toss the bed anywhere in the house. Just like the dog, a bed of this kind will take up a lot of floor space, which is why you need to choose the right size, so you could find its ideal place.

What Is the Best Dog Bed for Large Dogs?

Source: businessinsider.com

Without a doubt, the best dog beds for large dogs are the ones of the right size and the ones that feel cosy and snuggly. But in order to choose such a bed for your dog, first, you should observe your dog in order to find out what it likes.

Measure Your Dog to Find Its True Size

The ideal way to measure your dog is while sleeping, as this is the time when it’s peaceful and lays down comfortably. Take the measuring tape and start measuring your dog from the tip of its nose to its tail. Once you have it, add around 25cm in order to determine the ideal dog bed length.

Choose a Bed According to Its Sleeping Position

The Superman

Sprawled out on the tummy, this position allows your dog to pop up and be on its paws right away since your dog probably doesn’t want to miss a chance to be in any of the action. By sleeping in this position, your dog is probably taking up as much space as possible, so what you need to do is to choose a comfortable bed. The ideal dog beds for large dogs like your own superhero are pillow beds and mat-style beds. They are large enough to accommodate stretched-out limbs but cushiony enough to ensure comfiness. The filling of this bed can vary between different brands and manufacturers, and memory foam cushion beds are especially a great choice. The memory foam will mould beautifully to contour your dog’s big body, giving it the support it needs. The benefits of choosing such a bed are many, but the most important thing to have in mind when choosing such a bed is to get one with a washable cover. That way, you’ll be able to keep the bed clean and tidy with little to no effort

The Doughnut

Source: sitstay.com

The doughnut is a common sleeping position that involves the dog circling in one spot. That way they look as round as possible, resembling a doughnut. It has been said that this is dogs’ favourite sleeping position when the weather is cold, but some of them love sleeping like that since it makes them feel safe and protected. The ideal beds for such dogs are round beds that have side padding or square beds with higher side padding.

The Belly Up

Source: dicksmith.com.au

No matter how funny or strange it may sound, but some dogs really love sleeping on their back with their tummy up. Given the fact that both its tummy and intimate parts will be exposed, it surely takes a lot of confidence to sleep like that. The ideal large dog beds for these dogs are the trampoline-style dog beds and beds that have lots of padding to support their spine.

The Flip Side

Source: www.reviewed.com

Just like humans, dogs also love sleeping on their side and flip sides whilst sleeping. They love sleeping with their legs flopped out, and if there is something against which they can position their back, even better. If your dog loves sleeping in this position, you should consider the idea of choosing a bed with bolsters or padding. You can also consider the idea of investing in a padded cushion/pillow style bed as these beds give a lot of support to the hips and shoulders.

Think of Your Dog’s Special Needs

One thing is certain, the older the dog, the greater the chances of it having a health issue. However, regardless of age, for one reason or another, dogs can have a health issue, just like humans. So if your furry friend has one, make sure to choose an orthopedic bed. Usually, these beds are mat and pillow memory foam beds which are great for dogs with sore joints, spine problems, arthritis, etc.

How to Clean a Large Dog Bed?

Just like us humans, dogs can also be sensitive to some detergents and cleaning supplies, which is why cleaning them properly is essential. While vacuuming the cover frequently, you should also spot clean and wash the bed properly and regularly. This is essential not only for preventing the bad odour but also for the health of your dog.

Animal Alert: Steps to Take to Prevent Unwanted Visits from Animals

December 20, 2019 — by Valeriya Vimon

cat-running-from-animal-repeller.jpg

Animal lovers don’t think they’d ever find themselves in situations where they wouldn’t take the animals’ side until unwanted animal visits happen or worse, become frequent to the house.

It’s easy for neighbours’ domestic pets and wild animals (e.g. hares, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, mice) to become pests and start destroying things in your yard, garden shed and home, or even pose a threat to your well-being like getting visits from snakes, so it’s okay to want to protect your home.

There are many ways you can do so without harming the animals hence you wouldn’t have to worry about the well-being of your unwanted visitors, and no, it doesn’t make you less of an animal lover either if you take some measures! Now, let’s go through some of the steps you can take to ensure your safety and privacy.

snake and bat repeller

Repellers

No matter what animal problem you’re dealing with or trying to prevent, there’s the right type of electronic animal repeller for you. Unlike the good old chemical sprays that aren’t that effective and have to be applied and reapplied time and time again, this is an alternative that works on a battery as in the example of deterrents with accumulatory battery that get charged by solar power.

They’re much better than motion activated sprinklers too since these can be annoying to you and your pets (if you have them). The fact that they’re solar powered means they’re eco-friendly and using them wouldn’t affect your energy bill.

Along with this they’re great to be used around children, pets, and wild animals because they’re harmless as they work on vibrations and sounds depending on the model and the animal you need them for.

Given that not all animals are the same, to answer the question do animal repellers work, they do, but depending on the animals’ reactions and size, you might want to consider the size and features of the electronic animal repeller.

Then again, the choice might also depend on the size of your property, and in cases like keeping snakes away from your home, it’s advisable to use more than one or two deterrents at the same time, four to six if the property is large for better result.

When in doubt on how to use them, how to best position them specifically, some online stores have detailed info about this along with having all the features listed, as well as the warranty and reviews, so shopping online also makes for a great purchase.

Shield Your Home with a Fence

If you’ve had more unwanted visits already, it can surely feel like times of war when you’re on the lookout for the “enemy” day and night so why not do what ancestors did when they wanted to protect their homes and build a sturdy fence.

When dealing with animals that jump or dig, you have to pay attention to the size of the fence as well as the installation, preferably about one or one and a half feet of the fence buried and more than five feet above ground to keep them away.

A quality electronic animal repeller that’s created with the principles of latest technology and a top-notch fence are much better solutions than resorting to keeping a dog or a cat as your guards outdoors because they might end up in danger themselves or in the best case scenario they could befriend the visitors.

Cleanliness is Key

You’d be surprised how much of the problem can be taken care of when maintaining the outdoor space spotless. Wild animals are attracted by food, both from your garbage and trees in your yard, therefore it’s essential to always clean the area, not leaving out any fallen leaves, fruits, vegetables or nuts and always keeping your garbage in the garbage can.

Having in mind there are animals that would do anything for food, even go inside your garbage cans, it’s crucial to choose a robust model with a secure lid. Likewise, if you have pets, make sure not to leave any pet food outside.

Don’t forget to count on your gardening skills too because having grubs in the yard that you’re not aware of could also invite the animals; check for them, see whether they’re feeding on your grass and get rid of them if they are. In case you’re dealing with squirrels, you’d want to trim trees to prevent them from entering your home.

garden with flowers

Cover Up

When you have areas that are easy to get into, like spots under the garden shed, the patio, vents, the chimney or water surfaces like ponds and pools, it’s necessary to cover them up because animals looking for a warm place to stay in the colder months or thirsty ones wouldn’t hesitate to break in.

It wouldn’t be that difficult to cover them up using chicken net, chimney caps, steel screens and specialised pond and pool covers – affordable, easy to install and durable enough solutions to protect your home.

3 Steps to Finding the Right Dog Playpen and How to Clean It

December 11, 2019 — by Richard Dawson

dog-pet-playpens.jpg

Every dog owner wants to provide the best for their dog and while sometimes they can frustrate us with their canine habits, they are still dear to our hearts. when it comes to giving your dog the playtime it deserves without worrying about its safety as much, you can get a playpen. While this may look like you are caging your pet, if you know what to look for and keep its environment tidy, your dog will have plenty of room to do some of its daily activities without feeling left out.

best dog playpen

Location

Where you want your dog to roam safely is going to be a determining factor for the construction of the playpen. In case you want to place the dog playpen inside, make sure it doesn’t take up the majority of a room and that it doesn’t prevent your dog from having its everyday exercise and play.
Also, for indoor playpens, it’s best that you go with a floor-friendly surface that won’t cause any damage and it should also blend in with the interior. If you want to place your playpen outside, then make sure it is waterproof and strong enough to withstand the elements, but if you are not sure whether or not you are going to stick with the initial decision, you can always go with a playpen designed for both environments.

dogs with playpens

Size

Obviously the bigger the pen, the more freedom your dog will have but this also means that the price tag is going to be higher too. You should look for dog playpens that can allow your pet to play around without feeling trapped and there should also be enough space for food and water bowls, a dog bed and some toys too.

If your dog is big and hyperactive, the best option would be to go for a wooden or steel playpen but if you have a small dog that doesn’t jump up and down most of the time, you can always go with plastic playpens. If your dog likes to chew on stuff, getting a plastic playpen isn’t recommended as it can get damaged very easily, so steel is the best solution in this case.

Convenience

A pen should also be easy to set up as no one wants to spend a lot of time on that and also try to avoid playpens that need additional tools to set up. Lightweight playpens are always a plus but if you go with a big steel playpen that won’t be the case. To get the best of both worlds, go for aluminium pones as they are lightweight no matter the size and have about the same strength as steel playpens. If you are going to be putting away the dog playpen frequently, go for a foldable one with simpler design – this will allow you to clean it more easily.

Cleaning

Regular cleaning will not only keep everything looking good and tidy, but it will also contribute to both your dog’s and your health. A good rule of thumb is to clean and disinfect the playpen every week even if it is a portable one, but depending on your dog’s activity this can vary.

Every cleaning sessions should start by removing all the bowls, toys and other items inside it so you can dispose of the waste and clean everything properly. Rinsing the dog playpen is next and for this it is best to use a hose if you have a portable plastic or steel (wire) playpen, but if you have a large indoor playpen this won’t work. In that case, you should rinse the playpen with warm soapy water and then wipe it dry with a clean cloth.

Good scrubbing should always be a part of the routine no matter what type of material your playpen is made from. Using your usual go-to cleaning agent in your kitchen and some elbow grease, give the walls and floor some love – a hard bristle brush is ideal in this case. When you are done rinsing the whole thing, once again use warm soapy water and a clean cloth and let the playpen dry off completely – it is best to leave it in the open air.

Once you are done with the playpen, it’s time to clean your dog’s belongings. Bedding and blankets can be put in the washer after you give them a rinse with hot soapy water and the toys and bowls can be cleaned using the same cleaning agent you’d use for the playpen.

Keep One Step Ahead of Trouble by Boosting Your Horse’s Leg Protection

January 10, 2019 — by Richard Dawson

horse-float-boots3.jpg

Regardless of the discipline you ride, it should go without saying that leg protection is of paramount importance. Whether you have a young horse who still cannot run properly or a mature one who has issues, or you simply want to protect your horse from cuts and blemishes, choosing the right boots can make all the difference regarding any if these scenarios. These are the few things you need to consider.

Materials

In the past, the majority of leg-protection boots were made if leather. However, leather has become quite expensive, it’s demanding maintenance-wise and it’s not convenient enough as it becomes stiff and dry after it’s been wet. This means that the stitching will eventually rot and deteriorate, even if you take great care of the boots. Neoprene, on the other hand, is a modern, less expensive and low maintenance material. It’s also a great choice if your horse can’t help getting wet or muddy as it soaks up neither water nor debris. The only drawback of this material is that is doesn’t breathe which means that your horse will probably sweat underneath it. When it comes to sweating, a casual riding session is not something you should worry about, however, the horse shouldn’t wear such boots for extended periods of time. Nylon and fleece horse float boots are options offering enough protection and convenience which renders them the perfect middle ground.

Fit

If a boot is of the correct size, when you place it on the horse’s leg, the ends should meet or overlap slightly. If they overlap too much, thus causing bunches or wrinkles, take it as a sign that they aren’t going to stay in place and may even rub. A simple solution to this is to go with the smaller size if you are having a dilemma and there’s no perfect fit. Leather eventually stretches, and neoprene, nylon and fleece are more forgiving fabrics. Also, bear in mind that horse float boots are right or left, just like human boots. Generally, manufacturers place a handy “L” and “R”, but if there’s no indication, make sure that the closure straps are always pointed toward the back of the horse.

Maintenance

Boots that require more than a hosing can be cleaned with soap, water and a soft brush. Just make sure t that you rinse the soap thoroughly to avoid irritation. It is best to dry the boots in the air, but not in the sun if you want to protect the material properly. That being said, you should never use a damp, wet or simply a dirty boot on your horse. Apart from causing irritation, this can lead to an infection. Finally, for utmost convenience, make sure you buy machine-washable boots.

Proper Dog Nutrition Helps: To Keep Your Pet Healthy Take the Right Steps

December 4, 2018 — by Valeriya Vimon

puppy-eating-from-bowl-960x540-960x540.jpg

Dogs are the most loyal companions who offer their unlimited love unconditionally, provide us with a sense of safety, always listen without interruptions and patiently wait for us to come home. All they need in return is some care, love, and attention. Proper nutrition is a must if you want to make sure your dog stays healthy, happy and fulfilled, which at the end benefits you too since you will have a lively four-legged mood booster each time you come home. Every nutrient in your dog’s food serves a purpose. Without adequate nutrition, your dog would not be able to build and repair its muscles, teeth, and bones, it won’t be able to easily fight off infections and it will have difficulties while performing normal daily activities. Here are some of the benefits you can expect from a natural, fresh diet.

Disease Prevention

When the animal is fed with the proper types of food, which can conveniently be found in a farm supply shop, it can all act as a great prevention against diseases or help fight off an existing condition. Good and high-quality dog food can provide your furry friend with many vitamins and minerals needed for keeping its immune system and metabolism strong and functioning.

Weight Management

When a certain type of dog food is too heavy on starches, it can make your dog obese and unhealthy. This is why you need to opt for natural food options found in bulk in a farm supply shop and provide only the best for your pet. A large number of obesity cases when it comes to dogs, are due to the improper care of the dog by their humans, improper food choices and not enough playtime.

Skin and Hair Coat

It is a well-known fact that a dog with a rich, shiny coat is most likely well taken care of and adequately fed and bathed. This is due to the fact that properly fed dogs receive the right balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, and that leads to healthy skin. On the other hand, a dry skin may lead to hair that falls out, breaks and simply looks old.

Digestion and Elimination

A common aid for digestion and elimination found in a high-quality dog food are the carbohydrates. This is an important process because it allows your dog to keep all the necessary and healthy nutrients and easily get rid of waste. An additional benefit of a good digestive system is that your dog will have a good night’s sleep. If you take good care and carefully choose the food you provide, your dog’s rest will be consistent and uninterrupted.

Dog Training Collars: 3 Steps to Teaching Your Furry Friend Good Behaviour

November 12, 2018 — by Valeriya Vimon

dog-bark-29.jpg

We can all agree that dogs make the best friends, especially when they are well-behaved. But just like humans, dogs aren’t born with the idea of how to behave properly. In fact, they also need to be brought up in a proper way that will help them establish good habits and behaviour. Whether you’re trying to teach your furry friend to be more obedient, prevent excessive barking, or straying from home – dog training collars may be able to help in a way that’s least stressful for the animal.

Promote Better Leash Habits

Dogs that are new to wearing a leash may experience trouble getting used to walking with your tempo. So, if your daily walks feel more like you’re running after your dog, you might pull at its leash which can sometimes hurt the animal. In that case, it’s better to use dog training collars that release a mild shock that will divert the dog’s attention and signal it to stop or reduce its pace. Administering tiny shocks whenever the dog is tugging too much at its leash will eventually teach it how to walk at a proper pace.

Keep Your Furry Friend Close to Home

Shop our large collection of quality dog training collars and make your dog your best bud in no time.

Let’s be honest, dogs feel the happiest when they have the freedom to run around your entire yard without being tied down to a limited leash. With that being said, it’s advisable to leave your dog unleashed most of the time. However, if you live on a property that has short fences or lacks fencing, a dog without a leash can easily stray away and get lost. In that case, long-range dog training collars may be a great way to prevent your dog from wandering off from your home. These remote training collars can work at a range of up to 1000 m and come in three modes – beep, vibration, and static shock. Most of the times, the vibration mode is strong enough to teach the dog to stay put within the boundaries of your property. Some of these collars also have a GPS option which you can use to determine the exact location of your dog if it gets lost.

Prevent Excessive Barking

If your dog has a habit of barking incessantly or at night, there are training collars designed to help put an end to this behaviour. Most of these collars don’t require the use of a transmitter to deliver a signal to the dog. In fact, they can automatically recognize when barking happens and give your dog a mild signal that it will feel without experiencing any pain. Keep in mind that the collar only activates during loud barking specifically and won’t work on other typical vocal habits dogs have. Make sure that the training collar is made of silicone or another material that won’t cause skin irritation or damage over time.

Sustainable Living: Steps to Having a Healthy and Happy Flock of Chickens

October 25, 2018 — by Valeriya Vimon

Now that sustainable living has started gaining popularity, country life has gotten its fame back. For long, city life was the more desirable option and not surprisingly we’ve seen a huge rise in cityscapes for years. However, after all the news of global warming, waste of resources, and benefits of organic food versus GMO, many have turned back to the joys of growing their own fruits and veggies, even in the cities thanks to the urban gardening trend.
Fun doesn’t end there as some also include taking care of a flock of chickens, and getting their own fresh eggs instead of buying them. Spending time in the company of chickens can be rewarding itself, and don’t be surprised when you find out they aren’t the dumb creatures they have the reputation of.
Easy to care for, and fun to be around, it takes having the right food as well as the right bird medicine to keep your chickens healthy and happy. By medicine I don’t necessarily refer to products for when they’re sick but also those that improve their health, as well as their eggs.
The reason for this is most seeds lack essential fatty acids and vitamins, such as Omega 3 and 6, vitamin A and E, necessary for the immune system and egg production. Quality layer food consisting of the much needed nutrients like proteins and minerals is recommended too.
As for the water, it’s important to make sure it’s always fresh and clean (changing it daily), particularly in summer. What makes it important, other than keeping your hens and roosters hydrated, is the fact this way you’d prevent harmful bacteria from thriving. Regular sources of food and water are a must.Speaking of cleaning, this should be your next step when it comes to your chickens’ well-being. When hygiene isn’t your priority, it’s easy for the harmful organisms and parasites to make their way into the bedding. Dusting has to be one of your regular activities, and make sure you replace the bedding every month or so.

You don’t have to be a bird expert to know when something goes wrong, all you have to do is get to know your chickens so you immediately notice when they aren’t behaving like their old selves. To further prevent diseases, it’s advisable to vaccinate them as early as possible.

What Steps do Animal Transporters Take to Make Sure Everything Goes Right

June 4, 2018 — by Richard Dawson

animal-courier.jpg

Being a pet owner is incredibly gratifying for a large number of reasons. The companionship, the excitement you see when you come back home and walk through the door, the satisfaction of taking care of another living being, the list goes on. However, like with practically everything else, there are parts of owning a pet that aren’t exactly a thrill to go through, and trying to bring your little four legged or fine feathered little friend with you on a vacation or business trip can be a real pain. This, as well as the other major benefits are the reason people go to a pet transport service to do the job for them. But what are the other benefits exactly?
